Women’s Hiking Shoes for the Spring Thaw
Wednesday, February 29th, 2012With spring only a month away, many women are ready to think about womens hiking shoes. Consider whether you want leather or synthetic fiber hiking shoes. Advantages of leather hiking shoes include a breathable, durable, waterproof product. Disadvantages of leather hiking shoes include that they are heavier than synthetic shoes. Heaver shoes add stress to the body while walking. Another disadvantage is that synthetic shoes will not last as long as leather shoes. Lighter hiking shoes are good for women who only hike occasionally and carry lightweight backpacks. Heavy leather or synthetic shoes are good for serious hikers who take long hikes with a heavy load. Try on womens hiking shoes late in the day when feet are swollen and hot. Feet can actually increase by a half to a whole size on long hiking trips. Wear your hiking socks when trying on the shoes. Hiking socks should be medium to heavy weight. Make sure the shoes feel comfortable. Shoes need to fit well around your ankle and instep. Toes need wiggle room. Your feet should not slide in the shoe when walking. Look for good support in the heel. Make sure the sole has good traction for hiking on wet or slippery ground. In addition, thick soles will provide cushion for your feet and back. Thick soles protect the feet from sharp rocks. Make sure the shoe has good ventilation as feet can perspire up to two pints a day. It is best to walk around the house or go for short walks as much as possible in your new womens hiking shoes to break them in before going on your first long hike with your new shoes. Breaking the shoes in reduce the risk of blisters. With hiking shoes, you get what you pay for so be prepared to choose the more expensive shoe, as long as it is the most comfortable.
